Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and philosopher. In 1942 he was taken to a concentration camp, where he faced hunger, humiliation, illness and a daily threat to his life. Watching his own behaviour and that of the other prisoners, he found what holds a person back from the edge, what protects the mind, and what gives life meaning.
He wrote that experience down in a book that has since helped millions of readers find themselves. Frankl's argument is simple and hard won: once a person finds a meaning in their own existence, they find the strength to come through almost anything.
