“Chorna Rada” is the first Ukrainian-language historical novel, written and published by Panteleimon Kulish in 1857. In this “chronicle of historical events,” the author depicted the so-called Ruin — the period after the death of B. Khmelnytsky, when Ukraine was torn apart by various political and social orientations, which led to the “Black Council” (because the “chern,” meaning the common people, participated in it) in 1663.
